My name is Craig Powell.

I've been asked quite a bit over the last several year about writing a blog or holding a regular class or seminar to inform people about what I do. They have a hard time calling me a "florist". "You do so much more!",many say.

Before I started to write and really explore what Pollen is all about, I wanted to let her get "sea legs". Was this sparkling idea about clean, green sustainable living and design in one's every day life achievable? The urban man or woman might wonder where I was crazy enough to come up with the time to think about it, let alone live it. And in living it, how much time does it take "doing it"? It doesn't take the latest style or trend, the hippest restaurant or club, or a lot of money frankly, so wheres the statice?

Only in LA would you even ponder or ask that question I guess, but you still have to wonder why the urban man has lost his soul or connection to the earth.

YOU . ARE . EARTH.

That's a product line for another talk. Back to the mission at Pollen.

In my humble opinion, everyone has the chance to re-connect with that which brought us here and sustains us- dirt is the great equalizer. It looks the same on your hand as Paris Hilton's. Or maybe George Bush's.

It might look a little different on Barack's hand but it feels the same.....change is coming!

I think that all of us can take a couple quick steps to make a difference in our own "world". Simple modifications can lead to seeable results. I mean, you can live in an apartment and still grow a tomato. You just have to take a little time and grow the tomato. I mean, we "nurture" other things in our life, our hobbies, our looks and bodies, our bank accounts, our careers, so lets take a little time starting today to nurture a set of sustainable living principles that we can use as stepping stones to change our own footprint in life. Wether it's carbon emissions, pollution and wastage or the pound around our mid section, with a little personal action, maybe we can find a little more joy in the basics that brought us here, gave us life, and has sustained us since the beginning of time.

So, I'd like to cover all aspects of nature and design, botanical to industrial, natural elements to those that are man made and recyclable.

The common bond oar thread in our discussions are to again link our lifestyle through plants, flowers, and nature. Re-connect work and home to a natural way of sustainable living in a new century. Maybe start growing a little of what we eat. Maybe start producing things again- product. It can start in our back yards.

Being the beginning of October and a cold snap suddenly rebounding to a 90 degree day, there is watering to do. I did however prune the new hedge in the front of my home. Since it's been planted several weeks ago, it has taken hold nicely. Remember, on many hedges like my waxy leaf privet- "Trim one lead results in 2 branches". Have a nice evening and I look forward to talking tomorrow where we start in earnest preparing for Kwynn Sanders' wedding aboard the famed Queen Mary.

Yea!!!

Craig is in his element. Maybe I'll be able to conjure up the beautiful florals that graced the ship in its heyday.

Let's hope so!
